Basic Computer definitions
Part Two of "Computer Parts - what are they?" presented by The PC Doctor of Chilliwack, British Columbia.

Definitions

Monitor
That is the item that looks like a television, it is here that you see everything. It comes in a variety of sizes and styles. We will discuss the pros and cons and differences at a later date.

Computer
This is the big metal box that holds most of the parts.

Printer
This is the device that converts your text or pictures to a printed page. There are 3 kinds of printers - Dotmatrix, Inkjet ( Bubble Jet) and Laser (LED). We will discuss the pros and cons and differences at a later date

Scanner
This device allows you to take photos or documents and import them into your computer so that you can manipulate them later such as email a photo to someone or scan a medical receipt.

Mouse
This is the device that allows you to point and click objects on your monitor screen.

Trackball
This device is similar to a mouse and is quite handy for people with mobility problems. We will discuss the pros and cons and differences at a later date

Keyboard
You use this equipment to type information into your computer

Floppy drive
Contrary to some popular belief, this is NOT a hard drive. Some people do get confused by the hard plastic shell of the disk but it is called a floppy disk because of the FLOPPY Mylar disk inside the 3 1/2 inch disk case. You can see this disk if you slide the shutter back, however, ensure that you do NOT touch the Mylar disk itself as you could lose data.

Hard Drive
Or Hard Disk (Hard Disc), this is the permanent storage device for your computer. It is here that your files will reside until you delete them. Hard drives come in many sizes and brands. We will discuss the pros and cons and differences at a later

CD-Rom
This device allows you to read the cd's that most software comes on these days; it will also play music cd's.
